The Preliminary Examination shall now comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each. Detailed below is the new syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination, which is brought to the notice of the prospective candidates intending to appear at the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2011 onwards:
Paper I (General Studies) – (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization
- General Science.
Paper II (CSAT)- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision making and problem solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitudeetc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, datasufficiency etc. -Class X level)
English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).- Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level
(last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from
English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question
paper.
- The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.
A set of sample questions for both Papers would be put on the UPSC website http://www.upsc.gov.in in due course for reference of the prospective candidates. - The prospective candidates are advised to note that no changes are being introduced at this stage in the Civil Services (Main) Examination and Personality Test in the scheme of Civil Services Examination (CSE).

You may laugh at me after reading my issue, but i am unable to find a solution. I have completed my BE, computer Science, and am very much preparing for UPSC 2012. But i have small problem, I am not sure as which optional paper to chose for prelims and for main. CS is not included in the syllabus, am not very comfortable with math, is it okay to opt for economics or history?? am comfortable with history but economics I ll have start from scratch. What is your suggestion??.
@Vinutha, your query is genuine so no reason for me to laugh at this. You can choose Public Admin and History for Main exam. No need to choose subject for Prelims because its not required.

@Vaishali, it should be around 195+. Please read the Notification about the Sports reservation. As far as I know, there is NO vacancy under Sport quota for SC at STI Prelims 2011.

hi sir, i jst completed my mba from one of the best college. i never had any plan to get into mpsc/upsc jobs. but nw i have to get class 1 post through it, bcz my girlfrnd’s father want me to do this. he wont let me marry her if i wont b able to get tht!! this might b really weired to hear bt thts wht d fact is… basically i had different career plan. i was about start one educational foundation which were going to train students for high end success in life through vigorous training of life skills n all. and i wanted to my entire concentration on tht work but now i have to and have to get class 1 post tht too at 2011 exam! which is my first attempt. i never ever put attention to GK, politics, history, geography!! im really poor at it! and other thing my memory is biggest problem!! i cant remember things spclly GK!! but i am brilliant in aptitude exams! since i had gone through MBA entrance exams. i jst request u to suggest me wht r d things i should do, wht i should nt, hw should i prepare n everything tht u think i should knw. plz i really need help… i really love my gf n she really love me…. i jst cant live without her… i really hv to crack this n make this tough thing happen! i hv no choice… plz guide me, help me plz
